Clarification regarding By-law 596-20: The importance of accurate facts for a healthy local democracy

In recent days, misinformation has circulated on certain platforms regarding the proposed amendments to zoning By-law 596-20. The spread of misleading information creates confusion and deprives citizens of their right to make informed decisions. That is why the Town wishes to set the record straight today and reiterate the true intentions behind these changes.

Reminder of the objectives

Rather than waiting for the complete overhaul of the urban plan and the ensuing revision of the zoning by-laws expected in less than two years, the Municipal Council has chosen to take proactive and targeted action to protect our living environment. The amendments to By-law 596-20 aim to achieve two fundamental objectives:

  • By limiting the lot coverage of buildings—specifically accessory buildings across the entire territory and main buildings in certain zones—and by increasing side setbacks, the Town aims to preserve as much permeable surface as possible. This helps reduce stormwater runoff and promotes natural filtration before it reaches the lake, a particularly important issue in the Bondville sector.
  • The changes also aim to amend the definition of height to simplify its application, which will have the effect of reducing the maximum height of buildings located on sloping lots.

Citizens' rights

The Municipal Council deeply respects the right of citizens to disagree with these proposals. In fact, this is precisely the purpose of the referendum approval process.

If you do not agree with the 5 provisions that require the opening of a register, the democratic way to express yourself is to come and sign it. The register will be held on Friday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Centre Lac-Brome.

Important: For certain provisions, all eligible voters may express their views, while for others, only individuals from the affected sectors may do so. Consult the public notices to learn more.

Do you agree with the amendments? No action is required on your part.

"In Brome Lake, we encourage dialogue and citizen participation, as it is the very heart of our community life. However, misinformation serves no one and weakens our local democracy. I invite all citizens to get their information from official sources and, should they wish, to use the democratic tools available to them." – Lee Patterson, Mayor of Brome Lake

Citizens are always encouraged to consult the Town's official sources. To learn more about the details of these amendments, you can:
