Town of Brome Lake Implements Geese Control Measures at Douglass Beach

Committed to providing a clean and pleasant environment for its citizens and visitors alike, the Town of Brome Lake announces the deployment of a series of concrete measures aimed at reducing the presence of Canada geese at Douglass Beach.

When the warm season arrives, the grassy areas of Douglass Beach become a gathering place for many geese that come to feed and rest. Unfortunately, this high concentration of birds leads to an accumulation of droppings, which degrades the swimming water quality and the natural environment. Faced with these health and safety issues, it became essential to act to preserve the experience of swimmers and visitors.

In response to this situation, the municipal administration has opted for proven deterrent methods that are harmless and entirely safe for the birds:

  • The installation, for the entire summer season, of a netting fence bordering the grassy area, equipped with access gates for the public
  • The deployment of bird-of-prey kites, a technique that exploits the geese's instinct to flee from predators
  • The use of flashing nighttime lights, preventing the birds from settling in to rest overnight

Citizen collaboration: a key to success
The success of this action plan inevitably relies on everyone's participation. The Town is therefore calling on the valuable collaboration of users to maximize the effectiveness of these new installations. During their next visit, visitors are asked to:

  • Use exclusively the designated gates and close them after each passage
  • Avoid stepping over or crawling under the netting
  • Respect the equipment in place, which is fragile and essential to the system
  • Refrain from feeding the birds

The municipal administration will continue to closely monitor the effectiveness of these measures throughout the summer. By combining these eco-friendly deterrent methods with the vigilance of users, the Town of Brome Lake reiterates its commitment to protecting its natural spaces and providing top-quality recreational facilities for the entire community.
