Hydro-Québec Project: The Town of Brome Lake Acknowledges the Decision and Focuses on Minimizing Impacts

Brome Lake, June 10, 2026 – The Town of Brome Lake acknowledges Hydro-Québec’s decision to build the future Brome substation in the West Brome area, an important step in the project to modernize the electrical grid in the Estrie region.

While recognizing the need to modernize the grid, the Town shares the community's concerns regarding the choice of the transmission line route and intends to focus its efforts on minimizing the project's impacts on the territory and its residents.

“Modernizing the grid is necessary, and we understand that no community ideally wants to host such infrastructure. Now that the substation site is confirmed, our role is to work on minimizing the project’s impacts,” said Brome Lake Mayor Lee Patterson. “However, even though we had reservations about certain aspects of Route D, we are surprised by the shift to Route C without a more complete explanation. I am hopeful, though, that Hydro-Québec will provide us with the detailed justifications that led to this decision.”

The Mayor also stressed the importance of future collaboration to preserve the quality of life of residents and the character of the region.

“I want to commend the exceptional work of the governance committee led by Ms. Roxanne Parthenais. Even though their proposal was not selected, their contribution was essential in identifying the issues. We will continue a rigorous dialogue to ensure that the concerns raised, particularly the visual impact and quality of life, are taken into account as much as possible, for example by favouring the burial of power lines where feasible,” he added.

Information Sessions

Hydro-Québec invites the public to open house events during which the project team will present an update on the project, specifically on the selected site for the new substation and the route alternative still under review.

  • When: Wednesday, June 10, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday, June 11, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Where: Club de l'âge d'or de Cowansville (154 Principale Street)

It should be noted that this modernization project also includes the eventual dismantling of the substation located in the heart of the Knowlton sector.
