A participatory budget is a democratic process that allows residents to decide how a portion of the municipal budget will be allocated. It gives residents in the targeted areas the opportunity to propose project ideas that improve the quality of life in their community.
Through this initiative, the Town of Brome Lake aims to encourage civic participation, support meaningful projects, and strengthen community life across its territory.
Who Can Submit a Project?
- Any individual or organization established within the territory of the Town of Brome Lake may submit a project idea, regardless of age or social status.
- Minors must have their proposal endorsed by a parent or legal guardian (name and contact information are required on the submission form).
- Ideas may be submitted individually or on behalf of a group (such as an association, school class, family, group of friends, or neighbours).
Eligibility Criteria
Projects must serve the collective interest and may relate to public spaces, facilities, equipment, or public events, provided they fall within the Town’s jurisdiction.
They must also meet the following criteria:
- Respect the maximum budget established for the current edition;
- Serve the public interest and respond to collective, not individual or private, needs;
- Be accessible free of charge or at low cost to residents;
- Fall within the responsibilities of the Town of Brome Lake and be administered by the Town;
- Be feasible on property owned by the Town of Brome Lake or within the public domain;
- Incur limited operating and maintenance costs;
- Be sufficiently detailed to allow for legal, technical, and financial estimates;
- Be consistent with the Town’s plans and policies;
- Not already be underway.
Project Evaluation
Each submitted project is evaluated as follows: a score assigned by a committee based on predefined criteria and a popularity score based on residents’ votes.
The final score for each project is determined by weighting these two components, ensuring a balanced, transparent, and representative selection process that reflects local priorities.
Evaluation Criteria
- Added value to the population’s quality of life;
- Demonstrated support from residents of the sector concerned (print and complete the support form);
- Contribution to sustainable development;
- Scope and reach of the project;
- Innovative character.
